‘Gravel King’ Gorm on the podium in his home race in Denmark

Danish rider Christian Gorm won the gravel sprint classification in his home race in Denmark, the GP Herning. Gorm, who was born in Herning, basically knew every single gravel section on the course and took well advantage of that.

Gorm was one of Team SmartDry – Girona Cycling City’s main actors in the Copa de España this season. The Dane got the Catalan team a top 10 during one of the races, and also won the King of the Mountain classification in an other. The GP Herning was for the 24-year-old a trip to home soil, as he is originally from this Danish town.

Before the race, Gorm said it is special to be back racing in Denmark, especially in his ‘backyard’. Last year, Gorm, back then racing for a Dutch team, did not finish the race, and he was therefore very motivated to do better this year.

The 24-year-old had in mind to go in the breakaway of the day and was happy that he found himself there. “Winning the gravel classification was the main goal”, he said after the race with sixteen gravel sectors. “I am happy that I managed to do so for the team.”

The ceremony was a nice experience for the Danish cyclist living in Catalonia, as friends and family were around to give him a good round of applause. “I do believe my knowledge of today’s course was an advantage. I do not often train on gravel, however, I do know all these sections and all the roads around Herning very well. They barely changed since I live in Banyoles in the Fundacío Lluís Coromina house.”

Tomorrow, Sunday, Gorm competes in another one day race in Denmark: Fyen Rundt (UCI 1.2). The team hopes to be visible again, and be competitive in the final as well.
